I now am on Cobra since losing my job. A notation on the Cobra statement says I have to go on Medicare when I'm 65. I don't want to go on Social Security until I can receive full benefits. How does Medicare get paid for Plan B if you don't get Social Security?

Since you want to wait and sign up for Social Security benefits at your full retirement age, you are still entitled to both Medicare Parts A, B and D at age 65. You are eligible to apply for Medicare if you have paid into Social Security for at least 10 years. Medicare will send you a bill every 3 months for the premiums for Part B until you reach your full retirement age. The premium for 2009 is $96.40 per month if your income falls within the limits. Social Security Administration handles Medicare eligibility and enrollment and you can visit their site at www.socialsecurity.gov. You can also call Medicare at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users should call 1-800-325-0778) regarding enrollment or if you have any questions. Here's the link for the Medicare Eligibility Tool which you can copy and paste into your browser: http://www.medicare.gov/MedicareEligibility/home.asp?version=default&browser=Firefox|3|MacOSX&language=English If you decide to enroll in the Medicare Part D at age 65 (prescription drug plan) there are choices and most plans will offer payment terms as follows: 1. Deducted from your checking/savings account 2. Charged to a credit or debit card 3. Billed monthly by the plan 4. Deducted from your Social Security payment
